Background
The ankle is comprised of bones in the lower leg and the bone on top of the foot. Additionally, the ankle contains ligaments, muscles, and tendons. The foot is also made of many parts which work together to carry a person's body weight and support the body. Many of the parts of the foot come together at the heel. The heel is known as the intersection of the foot and ankle and guides movement of the foot and ankle. In a healthy individual, all parts work together optimally and results in pain free movement.
